Titled simply *Europe*, this 1916 drawing by Boardman Robinson makes the continent itself its subject rather than any single soldier or statesman. Executed in crayon, india ink and opaque white, it appeared in the October 1916 issue of *The Masses*, the socialist monthly whose antiwar cartoonists were among the sharpest critics of American involvement in the war. Robinson, a Canadian-born artist, used such drawings to press the moral questions the fighting raised, which is why the Library of Congress files it under the war's moral and ethical aspects. The magazine was suppressed in 1917 under wartime espionage laws.
