Clowns are the focus of this 1942 color lithograph advertising the Carnival festivities in Montevideo, a detail that sets it apart from other images of the city's celebrations. Carnival has long been a major street event in Montevideo, with costumed groups, music, and dancing filling the city in the days before Lent. Julio E. Suárez designed the poster, and its lithographic printing gave the bright inks that made such posters eye-catching on Montevideo streets. The work is a useful record of how the city promoted its festival in the 1940s.
