Few drawings from the Civil War capture a headquarters from such a low, close angle as this small pencil and Chinese white sketch on tan paper, which is labeled for the Commissary Department of the Army of the Potomac and dated March 1863. The Army of the Potomac was the main Union force in the eastern theater, and in early 1863 it was encamped under Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker, who had taken command in January after the defeat at Fredericksburg. Commissary departments handled rations and supplies, so the scene points to the everyday logistics that kept a large army fed and equipped during its winter camp. The drawing is a useful record of the camp life that often went unrecorded in battle histories.
