Few First World War recruiting posters speak so directly to a single community, and this one carries its text in both English and Polish. Artist W. T. Benda shows armored knights from the nation's past marching under the words "motherland and freedom," urging Polish Americans to follow their fathers and join the Polish army then forming in France. Poland had not existed as an independent state since its partitions among Russia, Prussia, and Austria, more than a century earlier, so a call to take up arms for it carried deep emotional weight. The poster ties ancestral heroism to present duty, a common appeal of the period.
