This 1918 color lithograph is built as a roll of honor, a format that let towns and organizations list the men who had answered the call to the Army or Navy. The poster pairs that list with eagle and flag imagery, the patriotic symbols that ran through American wartime recruiting. It was issued by the National Security League, a New York group founded in 1914 to promote national preparedness, and contributed by The Vigilantes, a volunteer organization that supported the war effort. Posters like this were meant to be displayed publicly, where they honored those who had enlisted and encouraged others to follow.
