First Call" borrows the language of a bugle signal, and the poster turns that urgency into a direct, personal appeal to join the Navy right away. It dates from 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, and it belongs to a wave of recruiting art that followed the Army's famous Uncle Sam poster in using a pointed, first-person address to the viewer. The Navy was growing quickly to escort troop convoys and patrol the Atlantic, so posters like this carried real recruiting weight. Notice how the wording frames enlistment as a matter of immediate duty rather than a distant commitment.
