A single day, 18 January 1916, gives this poster its focus. The title names Altona, the city on the Elbe just west of Hamburg, and calls the date an Opfertag, or sacrifice day, a local collection drive. Germany's wartime fundraising depended heavily on such appeals, which asked residents to give money or goods for the war effort and for soldiers at the front. The color lithograph was produced by a commercial firm in Altona, and the record links it to the economic side of the war at home, including fundraising and war bonds.
