Howard Brodie was a combat artist who sketched American soldiers during the Second World War and later the Korean War, and this lithograph reproduces one of his wartime drawings, titled "Moving up," with a credit line naming him as a sergeant in Europe in 1945. The print appeared in his 1962 book of war drawings, which gathered his field sketches of both conflicts. Brodie worked close to the front, often drawing quickly in pencil and ink so that images of ordinary infantrymen could reach readers while the events were still fresh. Its subject, American soldiers on the move in Europe during the final year of the war, reflects the wider role of combat artists in recording daily life in the ranks.
