Titled *Fünfte Kriegs-Anleihe*, or Fifth War Loan, this Viennese poster dates to 1916 and urged citizens of Austria-Hungary to buy government bonds that helped finance the First World War. Franz Püchingen designed the color lithograph, which the Vienna firm J. Weiner printed at a large 118 by 87 centimeters, big enough to catch the eye from across a street. Posters like this were a central tool of wartime finance, pairing patriotic imagery with appeals to civic duty as governments sought money from ordinary households. The poster is a useful record of how the home front was asked to pay for the war.
