Subscribing to Austria's third war loan, offered at 5 1/2 percent interest, is the appeal this 1917 Vienna poster makes in German, and its wording sets it apart from the many war-bond posters of the period. Austria-Hungary, like the other belligerents, financed much of its fighting by borrowing from its own citizens, and posters like this one carried the state's request for savings into shop windows, streets and public buildings. The lithograph's color design and the printer's name, J. Weiner, point to the commercial printing trade that produced such propaganda in wartime Vienna. Its attention to the home front, where money was asked for rather than soldiers, makes it a useful record of how governments tried to keep civilians invested in the war.
