Heraus mit unseren Gefangenen!" ("Out with our prisoners!") is the rallying cry of this 1919 color lithograph, issued in the name of the Volksbund zum Schutze der deutschen Kriegs- und Zivilgefangenen, a German league for the protection of war and civilian prisoners. The poster was designed by Paul Helwig and addresses German soldiers and civilians held in France after the 1918 armistice, when many prisoners remained in custody long after fighting ended. Its appeal reflects a wider postwar grievance in Germany, where families pressed for repatriation and the prisoners' labor in France became a source of political protest.
