The title frames this color lithograph as an altar of thanks: the Ludendorff-Spende, or Ludendorff Donation, is presented as a monument built by the German people's gratitude. The campaign, named for General Erich Ludendorff, was a wartime fundraising drive that invited ordinary citizens to give money to support Germany's war effort during the First World War. Posters like this one were a common tool of the home front, using religious imagery and patriotic language to turn private giving into a public duty. The record credits the design to Bernhard. Its subject, the economic cost and mobilization of civilians, is the focus of the Library of Congress's World War I holdings.
