A direct appeal to the German public, its title asks viewers to think of the Ludendorff donation for war-disabled men, a fundraising drive named for General Erich Ludendorff, then one of the most powerful officers in the German high command. By 1917 Germany had been at war for three years, and a growing number of soldiers were returning with amputations, blindness and other lasting injuries. Appeals like this one asked civilians to give money toward prosthetics, medical care and work for these men, showing how the state leaned on private charity to meet needs its wartime budget could not fully cover.
