Few wartime appeals were as blunt as this one. The title, *Das Gold dem Vaterland!* ("Gold to the Fatherland"), tells viewers to hand over their gold, and the ink stamp reading "Goldankaufsstelle Zweibrücken" shows the sheet was displayed at a gold purchasing office in the town of Zweibrücken. During World War I, the German government ran such drives to collect gold for state finances and the war effort. The 1916 date places the poster in the middle of that campaign, and its subject headings link it to war bonds and commemorative medals, which were also used to raise money and build public support.
