Printed in 1916, this black-and-gold lithograph uses the German slogan "Gold gab ich zur Wehr, Eisen nahm ich zur Ehr" ("I gave gold for defense, I took iron for honor"), which points to the wartime exchange in which citizens surrendered gold and received plain iron jewelry in return. The silhouette style, which the subject headings also note, was a popular graphic idiom of the period, lending the appeal a stark, emblematic quality. The poster was designed by Gipkens after Hosaeus, and it reflects how the German home front was asked to finance the war through both bonds and personal sacrifice.
