Rather than a battlefield scene, this 1916 color lithograph by Ludwig Hohlwein of Munich makes an appeal on behalf of German prisoners, both soldiers and civilians held abroad during the First World War. Its title calls for a "Volkspende," or people's donation, and the catalog tags it with the heart, a common emotional symbol in wartime charity appeals. Hohlwein was one of Germany's leading poster artists, and his bold, simplified forms were built to catch the eye of passersby among the many competing notices on city streets.
