The name at the center of this poster, Ludendorff, points to a specific German charity: the Ludendorff-Spende, a fund named for General Erich Ludendorff, whose reputation soared after the German victory at Tannenberg in August 1914. The campaign aimed to aid soldiers disabled in the war, a cause that became urgent as casualty lists grew. Munich designer Ludwig Hohlwein, one of Germany's most prominent poster artists, produced the design, which he rendered in a bold, simplified style suited to quick street viewing. The poster shows how wartime appeals joined military heroism with appeals to civic duty at home.
