Few posters from the German home front name a general as directly as this 1918 lithograph, which appeals for the "Ludendorff-Spende für Kriegsbeschädigte," a fundraising drive for disabled war veterans. The campaign carried the name of Erich Ludendorff, the army's chief quartermaster, whose endorsement lent it official weight as the war's human costs mounted. The artist, Olaf Gulbransson, was a leading caricaturist for the satirical magazine *Simplicissimus*, and his draftsmanship gives the appeal a sharper, more pointed look than conventional charity art. The poster reflects a wartime Germany that relied on public donations to care for the wounded and to support the families of the dead.
