The poster comes from the Union Amicale d'Alsace-Lorraine, a Paris-based association of Alsatians and Lorrainers who kept the cause of their home provinces alive after Germany annexed them in 1871. Its title, "Femmes Françaises," addresses French women directly in 1918, the year the war ended and the question of Alsace-Lorraine's return to France was settled. Women had carried much of the home-front load during the war, running farms, factories and households while men were at the front, and appeals like this one spoke to that shared effort. The piece is a reminder that the war was also fought over identity and national belonging, not only over territory.
