Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and war, anchors this 1916 lithograph, which advertises an artistic raffle and exhibition in Paris. The relief committee for Alsace-Lorraine organized the event, which ran from April 7 to 30, 1916, at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Émile Friant, a painter from Nancy whose work often drew on the landscapes and people of Lorraine, signed the design. Its colored lettering and running figure show how French artists used posters to raise money for civilians in territories that had been under German control since 1871.
