A pile of German helmets and captured weapons anchors this 1917 color lithograph, which promotes a traveling exhibition of "trophies from the front." Its caption, "How the mighty have fallen," tells viewers the display was meant to show a defeated enemy. The poster came from the Department of Pictorial Publicity in the Midwest, part of the federal Committee on Public Information that the Wilson administration created in 1917 to build support for American entry into the war. Printed by the Illinois Lithograph Company in Chicago, it shows how wartime propaganda used captured enemy equipment to stir public enthusiasm.
