This 1917 lithograph by Coles Phillips is numbered No. 8 in a series produced for the United States Fuel Administration, the wartime agency that managed coal and other fuel supplies after the country entered World War I. Its message, that lighting wastes coal and that saving light saves coal, reflects the push to conserve energy at home so that coal could go to factories, railroads and the war effort. Phillips was a well-known magazine illustrator, and his poster shows how commercial art techniques were turned to government appeals during the war.
