This color lithograph ties refrigeration directly to the war effort, presenting ice as a way to keep harvested food from spoiling before it could reach people abroad. The United States Food Administration, led by Herbert Hoover from 1917, urged Americans to conserve wheat, meat, and fats so that surplus could be shipped to Europe, and the National Association of Ice Industries co-sponsored the poster to promote cold storage as part of that effort. It was printed by Ketterlinus of Philadelphia, a commercial lithography firm, and its exact date is uncertain.
