A cat sits at the center of this 1917 color lithograph, which pairs the slogan "Treat 'Em Rough" with an appeal to join the United States Tank Corps. Tanks were a new and alarming weapon, first used by the British on the Western Front in 1916, so the poster presents the armored vehicle as a place for bold young men. Its small print invites fighting men of all classes from 18 to 45 to apply at a recruiting address on E. Street. The record also credits the United States Fuel Administration, a wartime agency, as a sponsor, a reminder that government recruiting and home-front messaging overlapped during the war.
