Here the Pied Piper tale is turned to a patriotic purpose, with Uncle Sam taking the piper's place at the head of a line of children headed for the garden plots. The United States School Garden Army grew out of the wartime push to raise food at home, when schools enlisted students to work vegetable plots that eased pressure on national supplies. Dated 1919, the poster carries that appeal past the armistice, asking young volunteers to keep digging after the fighting ended. Its bright color and folk-tale framing reflect the lively graphic style that campaigns of the period used to recruit children.
