Few gardens in America were as deliberately artistic as the one in this drawing, which shows children gathered among baby carriages at Rose Valley, Pennsylvania. The village was an Arts and Crafts community founded in 1901 by the architect and designer William Lightfoot Price, who wanted craftsmen and families to live and work together in simple, handmade surroundings. The watercolor and charcoal combine soft washes with firm linework, a technique suited to the informal domestic scene. The record dates the work only tentatively to about 1913, so the exact year remains uncertain.
