Elisa McAllister stands on a chair while her younger brother John sits in a high chair in this quarter-plate daguerreotype, made on July 23, 1849. The plate was produced by W. & F. Langenheim of Philadelphia, brothers who ran one of the city's early photographic studios. Exposures then took long enough that young sitters were often steadied with furniture and props, which helps explain the arrangement here. The bird-and-grapevine case is a decorative style of the period.
