Children, vegetables, and wheelbarrows fill this 1919 chromolithograph, issued by the U.S. School Garden Army under the title "Helping Hoover in our U.S. school garden." The name refers to Herbert Hoover, whose wartime Food Administration urged Americans to conserve food so that supplies could be sent overseas. School gardens extended that appeal into the classroom, teaching pupils to grow their own produce as a way to support the war effort. The poster was printed in New York by the American Lithographic Co., and its multicolor printing reflects the commercial lithography common to public campaigns of the period.
