Children are the recruits in this 1918 lithograph, which invites American schoolchildren to join the School Garden Army and directs them to write to the Bureau of Education in the Department of the Interior. Edward Penfield designed it under the sponsorship of the United States Food Administration, the wartime agency that urged Americans to grow, save and conserve food so more could be sent overseas. The poster's plowing and planting imagery reflects the victory garden movement, in which school plots and home gardens were meant to ease pressure on the national food supply. It is a good reminder of how the war effort reached into classrooms and backyards alike.
