Columbia, the figure long used to personify the United States, calls men to the U.S. Army in this 1916 poster, with a flag beside her and the words "Enlist now" set into the design. Frances Adams Halsted, who copyrighted the work in New York, created the composition, and V. Aderente painted it. The United States had not yet entered the First World War, but the country was debating military preparedness and the Army was seeking volunteers. Posters like this carried that appeal into public spaces, and the image of Columbia reflects the patriotic symbolism common in recruiting art of the period.
