Bradshaw Crandell's 1943 poster asks women directly, "Are you a girl with star-spangled heart?", and invites them to join the Women's Army Corps because thousands of Army jobs needed filling. The Recruiting Publicity Bureau of the U.S. Army produced it during the Second World War, when women took over clerical, communications, and other support roles so that more men could be sent overseas. The Women's Army Auxiliary Corps had been created in 1942 and became a full part of the Army in 1943, the year this poster appeared. The flag in its subject matter ties the appeal to patriotism as much as to steady work.
