Its slogan, "Get behind the girl he left behind him," borrows the title of a sentimental soldiers' song to urge American women to take up the farm work that men had left. Printed by the American Lithographic Company in New York around 1918 and issued under the New York State Land Army Membership Committee, the poster belongs to a wartime drive to recruit women for agricultural labor as young men were drafted or enlisted. It also promoted victory gardening, which the government encouraged to stretch food supplies for troops and Allied civilians. The illustrator is credited only as Guenther, a name worth noting for anyone tracing commercial poster art of the period.
