Poster no. 64 in this series is a long, narrow lithograph, about 14 by 78 centimeters, that asks its viewer directly, "Why not join the army?" Its catalog record lists flags among its subjects, a common device in wartime recruiting art meant to stir patriotic feeling. The poster was issued by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, a body set up in Britain in 1915 to encourage men to enlist voluntarily before conscription was introduced in 1916. Chorley & Pickersgill, a printing firm with offices in Leeds and London, produced it, and posters like this were pasted up in towns across the country.
