Few recruiting posters name a specific street address, but this one sends young men between 18 and 21 to a Chicago office at 505 South State Street, open day and night. The U.S. entered the First World War in April 1917, and the Army pressed hard for volunteers in the following years, when men under 21 generally needed a parent's consent to enlist. The poster was printed by Ryan & Hart, a Chicago firm, and its bold headline and direct address show how recruiters tried to make enlistment feel immediate and personal.
