Columbia, the female figure who personifies the United States, calls out to viewers in this 1916 recruiting poster urging them to enlist in the U.S. Army. Frances Adams Halsted designed the composition, which was copyrighted under her name in New York, and V. Aderente painted it. Dated a year before the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, it belongs to the preparedness movement, when the army sought volunteers as tensions with Germany grew. The American flags in the design tie military service to patriotic duty, a common appeal in posters of the period.
