A young woman's wish, not a sailor's, drives this 1917 recruiting poster, which declares that she would join the Navy if she were a man. The title credits Howard Chandler Christy, whose glamorous illustrated women were widely reproduced during the war, but the catalog entries also name Louis Tinayre and Frederic Remington, so the attribution is uncertain. The poster appeared the year the United States entered the First World War, when the Navy needed men fast, and its playful, flirtatious appeal and cross-dressing joke show how wartime recruiting tried to draw in men through humor.
