Christy's woman in this 1918 color lithograph is shown "doing her part to help win the war," a message aimed at American households in the last year of World War I. The poster's subjects, food supply, cookery, and grains, reflect the home-front campaigns of the U.S. Food Administration under Herbert Hoover, which asked families to cut back on wheat and meat so more could be shipped to Allied troops and civilians in Europe. Howard Chandler Christy was one of the most popular illustrators of the era, and his polished, idealized women made his work an effective way to present wartime duties as patriotic and even fashionable.
