Steinlen's poster puts its plea in the title: "In Belgium the Belgians are hungry," followed by "Artistic raffle," which tied the appeal to a lottery of donated artworks. Printed in 1915, when German occupation had disrupted Belgium's food supply and left many people dependent on outside aid, it reflects a wave of French and Allied posters that turned relief into a public cause. The two-color lithograph is signed by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, a French artist known for his drawings of everyday life in Paris, and his name on the sheet links this wartime appeal to his broader body of graphic work.
