Made in 1917, this color lithograph was produced for the American Committee for the Devastated Regions of France, a relief group that raised money for civilians in areas of France wrecked by the fighting of World War I. The artist, Paul Bruno (1874–1968), gave the poster a mother-and-children theme, which the subject tags also note, and that focus asked American viewers to see the war's damage through ordinary families who had lost homes and livelihoods. At 120 by 78 centimeters, it was built for display in public spaces, where appeals like this sought donors. The Library of Congress catalogues it as item 174 in a printed checklist of posters.
