Pour la France versez votre or" (Deposit your gold for France) is a 1915 color lithograph by the French caricaturist Abel Faivre, who designed it to persuade citizens to hand over their gold coins to the national effort. By 1915 France was paying heavily abroad for munitions and supplies, and gold was the currency foreign suppliers wanted, so the government encouraged people to deposit coins in exchange for paper money. The catalog also lists German military personnel among the subjects, which suggests the poster casts the enemy as the foil to French sacrifice. It shows how wartime finance was marketed to ordinary people through the language of patriotism.
