Sow wheat! It is gold for France" is the slogan on this 1918 color lithograph by Suzanne Ferrand, which turns a call to farm work into a patriotic appeal. Wheat, a scythe and the French flag share the composition, tying the harvest directly to the national war effort. By 1918, four years of fighting had drained France of farmland and farm labor, and imported grain was expensive and hard to ship past German submarines, so growing bread at home was a matter of survival. The poster also survives in a second issue, a sign of how widely the message was circulated.
