Semez du blé! C'est de l'or pour la France" (grow wheat, it is gold for France) turns a farm crop into a patriotic duty, and Suzanne Ferrand's 1918 lithograph pairs wheat and a scythe with the French flag. The design belongs to the wartime effort to keep France fed while many farmworkers were at the front, when grain was treated as a national resource and women and older workers were urged to fill the gaps in the fields. Posters like this were printed in quantity and pasted in towns and villages, where they asked ordinary readers to give their time and labor to the war effort.
