Few early war posters tie the dead so directly to a particular place as this one, whose title, *Debout! Nos morts pour la patrie... voici la France!*, translates as "Stand up! Those who died for our country... This is France!" It shows mothers and children among graves in a cemetery in Alsace, a province Germany had taken from France after 1871 and one that French propaganda repeatedly held up as a symbol of national loss. Color lithographs like this were designed to stir feeling for the fallen and for the cause, and the sheet is signed by the artist, L. Jonas. The record also lists the United States Fuel Administration as a sponsor, which suggests the design was later used in American wartime campaigns.
