Addressed directly to French women, this 1914 lithograph places the blame for the outbreak of war on Germany, claiming it came despite efforts by France, Russia and England to keep the peace. Its appeal is aimed at the women left behind when men were called up in the summer of 1914, when many households and farms had to carry on without them. The poster reflects the propaganda that accompanied French mobilization, when such images were pasted on walls to shape public opinion at home.
