The French title, which appears to read *Exposition des dons aux armées*, points to a display of gifts collected for French soldiers. By 1916 France had been at war for nearly two years, and the fighting at Verdun that year made the army's needs a constant public concern. Civilian committees, churches and schools gathered knitted wool gear, tobacco, chocolate and books, which were sorted, shown and then shipped to units at the front. Exhibitions like this one let donors see what their contributions had become and kept the war present in ordinary life far from the trenches.
