Few images of the First World War made the bombing of Reims cathedral as central as this 1916 lithograph, which takes the city's damaged Gothic landmark as its subject and calls it "the crime." German artillery shelled Reims from September 1914, and fire swept the cathedral's roof during the bombardment, a loss that became a symbol of wartime destruction on both sides. Printed in two colors, the poster advertised an exhibition whose proceeds went to victims of the shelling and to a French-Belgian refuge, so its appeal was both moral and charitable. It is signed by the artist A. Sénéchal.
