A charity matinee at the Palais du Trocadéro, promoted under the motto "All the children for the children," is the subject of this 1916 poster. Its proceeds were meant for schools serving Belgian refugee children in England, many of whom had fled after Germany invaded Belgium in August 1914. The poster is signed "d'après Poulbot," referring to Francisque Poulbot, the illustrator known for his scruffy, street-smart Paris urchins, and this sepia lithograph turns that affectionate style toward a wartime cause. It was later held by the collector Willard Dickerman Straight.
