Few wartime posters link a bond drive so directly to a family's land. Here a mother and children work the fields, and the French title promises to "return to us the entire sweet land of France." That refers to the regions in the north and east occupied by German forces since 1914, so the loan was framed as a way to win back the countryside. Issued in 1918 by the Société Générale, the bank that marketed the national loan, the lithograph is signed by the artist B. Chavannaz. Wartime loans like this one raised money to pay for the army and for the postwar recovery that was expected to follow.
