A plowman guiding a team across a field marked with crosses gives this 1920 lithograph its particular charge: the furrows are being turned over the graves of the war dead. Abel Faivre, a caricaturist known for his satirical drawings, designed the poster for the 1920 National Loan, a government bond issue meant to help pay for rebuilding France after the First World War. Printed in Paris by Devambez and sponsored by the Crédit Lyonnais bank, the color lithograph ties the loan to the land itself, the "Terre de France" of its title, which had been fought over and was now being returned to cultivation.
