This view shows the southern side elevation of the Halles centrales, Paris's great wholesale food market. Victor Baltard designed its iron-and-glass pavilions under Napoleon III, and they went up in the 1850s and 1860s as part of the city's rebuilding under Haussmann. Often called the "belly of Paris" after Zola's novel, the market supplied the city for more than a century before the pavilions were demolished in the early 1970s.
